Among the few surviving weapons, swords are once again the most numerous, and about 50 examples have been found in Poland dating from the 12th to 13th centuries. These fall within Oakeshott’s types XI, XII, XIII and XIIIa.3 Swords of Oakeshott’s type XI appeared as early as the 11th century and remained in use until the end of the 13th century. They are all single-handed weapons with disc pommels and straight cross-guards; their pointed blades, which were intended for both cut and thrust, have a narrow fuller which extends up to 80 per cent of the blade’s overall length. On the other hand, swords of type XII seem to be the most common in Poland from the early 13th century to the first quarter of the 14th century. Their thrusting blades had a maximum length of 80cm (31.5in), while the fuller reaches up to 75 per cent of the length. Examples of type XIII and XIIIa weapons could be regarded as the heavy ‘swords of war’, and were also characteristic of Scandinavia, Germany and Central Europe. They appeared in Poland during the 13th century and remained in use until the end of the medieval period. Here the fuller usually reached the middle of the massive blade, which was itself sometimes more than 110cm (43.3in) long. Although there are no surviving examples, pictorial sources suggest that some forms of dagger were also used by Polish knights of these centuries.
